FROM THE PLAYWRIGHTS
At its core, TEXAS ANNIE uses humor and heart to tackle shame and stigma around the topic of sex. It’s inspired by a real-life Texas law that made owning six or more sex toys a felony. Though overturned federally in 2008, it remains on the books. Which means, presently, you can (legally) own more guns than sex toys in Texas. Meanwhile, new anti-obscenity laws—largely targeting the LGBTQ+ population—are popping up at an alarming rate.
As queer, non-binary (Jenn) and queer, trans (Roz) artists, we know what it’s like to carry the weight of society’s shame around sex, gender, and identity. Writing this show has been our way of shaking that off—of turning shame into laughter, fear into celebration, and isolation into community. We hope it offers you a space to do the same.
More than ever, we need stories that remind us we’re not alone. Stories that bring us together in love, in laughter, and in the radical act of joy.
